Năm 1999, tỷ phú Mark Cuban đã mua một chiếc máy bay Gulfstream V qua Internet với giá 40 triệu USD để phục vụ việc di chuyển, đặc biệt là đi công tác. Vụ mua bán online có giá trị “khủng” này đã đưa doanh nhân người Mỹ vào sách Kỷ lục Guinness Thế giới với danh hiệu giao dịch thương mại điện tử đơn lẻ lớn nhất.
Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn với tờ Money năm 2017, Cuban chia sẻ: “Mua một chiếc máy bay riêng là mục tiêu hàng đầu của tôi bởi tài sản tôi quý trọng nhất trên đời là thời gian. Việc sở hữu máy bay riêng sẽ giúp tôi tiết kiệm rất nhiều thì giờ”.
Trên thực tế, Cuban không phải là tỷ phú có thói quen chi tiêu quá đà. Đi lên từ hai bàn tay trắng và từng gõ cửa từng nhà để bán túi đựng rác, hơn ai hết, Cuban hiểu được giá trị của đồng tiền.
Dù sở hữu khối tài sản 4,2 tỷ USD nhưng ông sống vẫn trong một căn nhà suốt 18 năm và đi ô tô cũ. Và khoản chi 40 triệu USD cho một chiếc máy bay của ông là để phục vụ mục đích chính đáng.

Cuban kể lại trong cuộc phỏng vấn với Business Insider: “Có rất nhiều ví dụ về việc chiếc máy bay đã giúp tôi như thế nào: Rời một trận đấu khuya để có mặt đúng giờ vào sáng hôm sau hay rời khỏi cuộc họp để kịp về nhà tham gia một bữa tiệc cùng gia đình… Tất cả đều là những việc tôi không muốn vắng mặt và chiếc máy bay đã trở nên vô cùng hữu dụng.
Khi đó, tôi có nhiều thời gian trong ngày hơn cho gia đình và bạn bè. Bên cạnh đó, tôi cũng có thể hoàn thành nhiều việc hơn vì không mất quá nhiều thì giờ để di chuyển giữa các địa điểm ở cách xa nhau. Và nó cũng có nghĩa là tôi có thể đi du lịch một cách thoải mái cùng gia đình. Chiếc máy bay đó chính là yếu tố giúp thay đổi cuộc sống của tôi”. Kể từ đó, Cuban đã mua thêm hai chiếc máy bay riêng vào bộ sưu tập của mình.
Cuban viết trong một bài báo: “Vào cuối mỗi ngày, thời gian là thứ mà chúng ta không thể sở hữu và lấy lại. Chính vì vậy, tôi luôn tìm cách để tận dụng tối đa 24 giờ của mình. Đây cũng là lý do một chiếc máy bay tư nhân dù đắt đến mấy cũng khiến tôi tình nguyện bỏ tiền ra mua. Nó đã giúp tôi tiết kiệm hàng giờ đồng hồ mỗi ngày”.
Cuban không phải tỷ phú duy nhất cho rằng việc mua máy bay riêng là hoàn toàn xứng đáng. Nữ tỷ phú tự thân, bà trùm truyền thông Oprah Winfrey cũng cho biết bà mua phi cơ riêng một phần vì đam mê và phần còn lại để phục vụ nhu cầu di chuyển của mình.
Winfrey chia sẻ với Edward Enninful, tổng biên tập tạp chí Vogue: “Có thể nói rằng việc sở hữu máy bay riêng là điều xa xỉ bậc nhất bởi một phút trước, bạn có thể đang ở New York nhưng phút sau bạn đã trên đường đến London”.
Huyền thoại đầu tư Warren Buffett tuy vẫn di chuyển bằng chiếc xe hơi bình thường và sống trong căn nhà mua từ năm 1958 với giá 32.000 USD cũng sở hữu máy bay riêng. Lý giải về điều này, ông cho biết mình bỏ ra khoản tiền đáng kể mua máy bay riêng để giúp cuộc sống trở nên dễ dàng hơn nhờ tiết kiệm được thời gian di chuyển khi đảm nhiệm vai trò CEO của Berkshire Hathaway.
