Instagram giới thiệu tính năng này từ năm 2011. Ban đầu, nó là cách hiệu quả để tìm kiếm các tài khoản mới. Sang năm 2012, Instagram ra mắt mục “Phổ biến” và sau chuyển thành “Khám phá”. Đây là công cụ chính giúp người dùng tìm ra nội dung mới dựa theo sở thích và hành vi của từng người.
Phó Chủ tịch sản phẩm Instagram Vishal Shah cho biết tính năng “Đang theo dõi” không được sử dụng rộng rãi. Nhiều người dùng còn không biết là hoạt động của mình bị xuất hiện trên này. Người phát ngôn Facebook cũng xác nhận với Gizmodo từ ngày 8/10, Instagram sẽ bỏ thẻ “Đang theo dõi”.
Theo Shah, nguyên nhân chính dẫn đến quyết định này là Instagram muốn mang đến sự đơn giản cho ứng dụng. Chắc chắn, không ít người cảm thấy tiếc nuối nhưng số còn lại sẽ thở phào nhẹ nhõm vì nhất cử nhất động của họ trên Instagram không bị ai theo dõi nữa.
