Theo tiểu sử chính thức, ông William Gates II là một cựu chiến binh trong quân đội và là đối tác sáng lập của một công ty luật ở Seattle.

Bill Gates cho biết cha của ông rất quan trọng trong việc thành lập tổ chức từ thiện vốn là trọng tâm của gia đình Gates kể từ khi ông rời bỏ vị trí điều hành Microsoft.
