Năm 2018, chỉ với 7.000 tỷ doanh thu nhưng mảng nước chấm thu về tới 3.600 tỷ đồng lãi gộp và 2.500 tỷ đồng lợi nhuận trước thuế, tương ứng tỷ suất lợi nhuận gộp và lợi nhuận trước thuế doanh thu lần lượt là 51% và 36%.
Sau thời gian khởi nghiệp tại Đông Âu, các lãnh đạo chủ chốt của Masan Group đã quyết định về nước kinh doanh từ năm 1996 với ngành nghề kinh doanh ban đầu là nước chấm. Tuy vậy phải đến 6 năm sau, sự hiện diện của Masan trong ngành mới thực sự đáng kể khi tung ra sản phẩm nước tương Chin-su vào năm 2002, nước mắm vào năm 2003 và sau đó là mì ăn liền.
Với hàng loạt động thái tái cấu trúc cũng như mở rộng nhanh chóng thông qua M&A, Masan Group hiện trở thành một trong những tập đoàn đa ngành lớn nhất Việt Nam, hoạt động trên rất nhiều lĩnh vực như nước chấm, mì ăn liền, cà phê, đồ uống đến thức ăn chăn nuôi, chế biến thịt, chế biến khoáng sản cùng một khoản đầu tư lớn vào ngân hàng Techcombank.
Các mảng kinh doanh này mang về cho Masan tổng doanh thu 38.200 tỷ đồng trong năm 2018. Trong đó, các mặt hàng nước chấm, mỳ ăn liền và đồ uống của Masan Consumer đóng góp 17.000 tỷ đồng.
Việc mở rộng sang nhiều ngành hàng mới khiến cho tỷ lệ đóng góp của mặt hàng lâu đời nhất là nước chấm vào tổng doanh thu của Masan Group hay Masan Consumer không còn lớn như thời gian trước.
Nhưng với thị phần vượt trội trong ngành cùng việc ngày càng tập trung vào nhóm sản phẩm cao cấp, thì mảng nước chấm vẫn thực sự là “con gà đẻ trứng vàng” cho Masan.
Mảng nước chấm cũng là phân khúc mà Masan thống lĩnh thị phần (báo cáo thường niên 2017 của Masan Consumer cho biết công ty nắm giữ từ 66-71% thị phần của các mặt hàng nước mắm, xì dầu cũng như tương ớt) trong khi các mảng kinh doanh khác như đồ uống, mì ăn liền hay thức ăn chăn nuôi thì Masan cũng chỉ là công ty số 2 hoặc số 3 trong ngành. Do vậy mà tỷ suất lợi nhuận do nước chấm đem lại vượt trội so với các ngành hàng khác.

Tỷ suất lãi gộp 51% dù cao nhưng không hẳn là quá vượt trội trong ngành hàng tiêu dùng nói chung. Nhưng tỷ suất lợi nhuận trước thuế lên đến 35% – tức cứ thu về 3 đồng lãi hơn 1 đồng – của mảng nước chấm có thể nói là “trong mơ” đối với ngay cả những doanh nghiệp hàng tiêu dùng lớn nhất Việt Nam như Vinamilk, Sabeco. Tỷ lệ này của Vinamilk là 23% và Sabeco chỉ là 15%.
Các mảng kinh doanh khác của Masan Consumer có tỷ suất lợi nhuận thấp hơn hẳn: mì ăn liền đạt 14% và đồ uống đạt 18% và hợp nhất toàn hệ thống Masan Consumer đạt 23% – tức ngang với Vinamilk.
