Gần đây, nhu cầu rơm tại nhiều địa phương vùng ĐBSCL có xu hướng tăng cao do người dân sử dụng rơm để sản xuất nấm rơm, trồng rau màu, hoa kiểng, cây ăn trái và chăn nuôi trâu bò. Trong khi đó, nguồn cung rơm đang có phần hạn chế nên giá bán lẻ rơm cuộn tại nhiều địa phương ở mức khá cao, từ 20.000-22.000 đồng/cuộn (khoảng 15-30kg/cuộn), tùy rơm khô hay ướt. Do rơm cuộn bán được giá cao, nhiều người kinh doanh rơm rạ đã tìm đến tận các ruộng lúa vụ thu đông 2020 của nông dân tại TP Cần Thơ để mua rơm và sử dụng máy cuốn rơm để thu gom rơm ngay sau khi lúa vừa thu hoạch. Mỗi héc-ta lúa thương lái trả tiền cho nông dân từ 300.000-400.000 đồng để thu mua rơm.
Ruộng lúa của người dân tại xã Thới Xuân, huyện Cờ Đỏ được thương lái thu gom rơm ngay sau khi lúa được thu hoạch.
Theo nông dân, dù mức thu mua rơm của thương lái không cao nhưng cũng góp phần tạo thêm nguồn thu nhập cho nông dân và hạn chế việc đốt, bỏ rơm rạ vừa lãng phí, vừa ảnh hưởng xấu đến môi trường. Riêng nông dân không muốn bán rơm có nhu cầu giữ lại phục vụ các hoạt động sản xuất để thêm thu nhập, cũng có thể dễ dàng thuê mướn các máy làm dịch vụ thu gom rơm, với giá khoảng 9.000-10.000 đồng/cuộn rơm.
Rơm thu gom khá nhanh chóng nhờ có máy thu hoạch rơm đa năng, vừa hút rơm, vừa cuốn rơm và cột thành từng cuộn dễ dàng bảo quản và vận chuyển. Máy này chỉ cần 2 lao động, gồm 1 người cầm lái điều khiển máy và 1 người ở sau thùng xe của máy để chất gọn các cuộn rơm. Mỗi ngày, máy cuốn rơm đa năng có thể thu hoạch trên diện tích 4-5ha ruộng lúa, thu được 600-700 cuộn rơm.
