Các cửa hàng tiện lợi đang trở thành đối thủ cạnh tranh trực tiếp mạnh mẽ của nhiều kênh thương mại truyền thống trong nhiều lĩnh vực.
Hiện tại, về mặt quy mô, tỷ trọng và mật độ cửa hàng tiện lợi ở Việt Nam vẫn còn tương đối thấp: trong khi các cửa hàng tiện lợi thường chiếm khoảng 20% thị trường ở các nền kinh tế khác, thì con số này ở Việt Nam chưa đến 10%.
Về mật độ, cứ 54.400 cư dân thì sẽ có một của hàng tiện lợi. Vẫn còn khá thấp so với các thị trường như Hàn Quốc và Trung Quốc. Tại Hàn, cứ 2.100 người sẽ có một cửa hàng tiện lợi. Còn ở Trung Quốc thì một cửa hàng tiện lợi sẽ phục vụ trung bình 24.900 cư dân.
Tuy nhiên, thị trường cửa hàng tiện lợi đang tăng trưởng mạnh mẽ với tốc độc chóng mặt. Theo báo cáo của Deloitte, trên toàn đất nước Việt Nam, số lượng cửa hàng tiện lợi đã tăng gấp bốn lần kể từ năm 2012 và hình thức này cũng chiếm tỷ trọng lớn nhất trong số lượng mở mới các loại hình mua sắm trong 9 tháng đầu năm 2018. Sự hấp dẫn của các cửa hàng tiện ích không chỉ thu hút sự chú ý của các tập đoàn trong nước như VinGroup, Saigon Co.Op mà còn cả công ty nước ngoài như Circle K, B’s Mart, Mini Stop, 7-Eleven, GS25…
Vingroup có kế hoạch mở 4.000 cửa hàng tiện ích Vinmart vào năm 2020, trong khi Saigon Co.op đang tiến hành mua lại mạng lưới các cửa hàng tạp hóa nhỏ, chủ yếu ở khu vực nông thôn, để mở rộng thị trường. Cũng trong giai đoạn này, gã khổng lồ bán lẻ 7-Eleven đặt mục tiêu tăng số lượng cửa hàng lên 1.000 trong vòng 10 năm, trong khi công ty Hàn Quốc GS25 bắt tay vào nỗ lực mở 2.500 cửa hàng trong 10 năm tới.
Có thể thấy, các doanh nghiệp trong nước vẫn đang chiếm phần áp đảo thị trường cửa hàng tiện lợi với tỷ trọng 70%. Tính đến hết tháng 1/2019, Deloitte báo cáo, chỉ riêng Vinmart+ đã có tất cả 1.700 cửa hàng. Trong khi tổng cộng các cửa hàng tiện lợi thương hiệu nước ngoài (không tính Shop&Go đã nhượng lại cho VinGroup) chỉ dừng lại ở con số hơn 600.
Tỷ lệ tăng trưởng hàng năm kép doanh số bán lẻ các cửa hàng tiện lợi của Việt Nam đang là 35,7%, cao hơn rất nhiều so với các quốc gia còn lại trong khu vực Đông Nam Á.
Với tầng lớp trung lưu phát triển nhanh nhất ở Đông Nam Á, Việt Nam đã đạt được tốc độ tăng trưởng phi thường trong lĩnh vực bán lẻ. Xu hướng này sẽ còn tiếp tục trong tương lai, do nhân khẩu học với dân số tương đối trẻ và xu hướng chi tiêu tiêu dùng phát triển mạnh mẽ.
