Danh sách 25 nữ doanh nhân quyền lực nhất châu Á (Asia’s Power Businesswomen 2019) năm nay của Forbes đã vinh danh 25 người phụ nữ thành đạt đang đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc định hình lại kinh doanh của châu Á trong vài thập kỷ tới.
Forbes Asia lần đầu tiên đưa ra danh sách gồm 50 nhà lãnh đạo doanh nghiệp xuất sắc đang thay đổi các ngành công nghiệp và khu vực vào năm 2012. Sau đó, đến năm 2013, danh sách này đã được đổi tên thành Women In The Mix và năm ngoái là Emergent 25. Ban biên tập cho biết điều này rất cần thiết để phản ánh sự gia tăng của các doanh nhân tự thân, đặc biệt là trong lĩnh vực công nghệ và bán lẻ.

Bất kể nền tảng khác nhau ra sao, họ đều là những người đang thách thức các định kiến và phá vỡ rào cản của nhiều ngành công nghiệp của khu vực.
Một trong những cái tên không thể không nhắc tới của danh sách này là Tan Hooi Ling, nhà đồng sáng lập và COO của công ty khởi nghiệp decacorn (đạt giá trị từ 10 tỷ USD trở lên) đầu tiên tại Đông Nam Á – siêu ứng dụng Grab.

Tháng 3 năm ngoái, Grab đã mua lại toàn bộ hoạt động của đối thủ Uber tại Đông Nam Á trong một thỏa thuận trị giá hàng tỷ USD. Theo đó, Uber sẽ có 27,5% cổ phần trong Grab, con số tương ứng với thị phần lúc đó của Uber tại khu vực và CEO của Uber, ông Dara Khosrowshahi sẽ tham gia vào ban lãnh đạo của Grab.
Theo công ty nghiên cứu ABI có trụ sở tại New York, thương vụ thâu tóm trên cùng những nỗ lực mở rộng khác đã giúp Grab tăng thị phần tại Indonesia – thị trường lớn nhất khu vực Đông Nam Á với 60% (tính theo lượng gọi xe) vào giữa năm 2018 so với 30% vào đâu năm 2017.
Cha của Ling làm việc trong lĩnh vực kỹ thuật dân dụng và ông chính là người đã truyền cảm hứng để cô theo học ngành cơ khí tại Đại học Bath ở Anh. Sau 1 năm làm kỹ sư thiết bị tại công ty dược phẩm khổng lồ Eli Lilly ở London, Tan chuyển sang công ty tư vấn McKinsey ở quê nhà Malaysia, nơi tài trợ cho cô học bằng MBA của Harvard.
Ở đó, cô đã gặp người đồng sáng lập Grab, Anthony Tan trong một lớp học năm 2011. Sau khi tốt nghiệp, tuy làm việc cho Salesforce ở San Francisco nhưng Ling vẫn dành thời gian rảnh rỗi để phát triển Grab với Anthony Tan. Mục tiêu trong tương lai của Ling là củng cố vị thế của Grab trong thị trường vận tải theo yêu cầu trị giá 25 tỷ USD và chiếm một phần thị trường thanh toán 500 tỷ USD ở châu Á. Tại Singapore, Grab đang là 1 trong 5 đơn vị xin giấy phép ngân hàng số do Cơ quan tiền tệ nước này cấp lần đầu tiên trong năm nay.
Đơn vị công nghệ tài chính (fintech) của Grab muốn người sử dụng ứng dụng Grab tải xuống hơn 152 triệu lần để sử dụng ví điện tử của hãng. Ngoài ra, công ty này còn dự định sẽ bán bảo hiểm và cho vay.
Năm ngoái, Grab hợp tác với Credit Saison của Nhật Bản để cung cấp dịch vụ cho vay và hợp tác với Mastercard cho các dịch vụ trả trước. Ngoài fintech, Grab cũng đang “nhăm nhe” lấn sân sang một số lĩnh vực khác bao gồm dịch vụ video, đặt phòng du lịch và chăm sóc sức khỏe.
