Theo CNBC, người đồng sáng lập Microsoft nhận định chính phủ Mỹ bỏ lỡ cơ hội tránh việc phong tỏa bắt buộc do không hành động đủ nhanh để kiểm soát dịch Covid-19.
“Mỹ đã bỏ lỡ cơ hội kiểm soát dịch Covid-19 mà không cần phong tỏa”, Bill Gates chia sẻ trong chương trình TED Connects ngày 24/3. “Chúng ta đã không hành động đủ nhanh. Lẽ ra mọi người cần chú ý tới dịch bệnh này từ hồi tháng 1″.

Những ngày qua, chính quyền các địa phương tại Mỹ khuyến cáo người dân ở nhà để ngăn dịch lan rộng. Nhiều bang và thành phố – gồm California, New York và Washington, D.C – ra lệnh tạm đóng cửa các cơ sở kinh doanh không thiết yếu.

Ngày 24/3, Tổng thống Mỹ Donald Trump tuyên bố muốn các doanh nghiệp mở cửa trở lại vào ngày lễ Phục sinh (12/4) nhằm hạn chế ảnh hưởng về kinh tế.
Tuy nhiên, nhiều chuyên gia y tế Mỹ chỉ trích quan điểm này. Họ cảnh báo rằng việc cho người dân trở lại làm việc sẽ khiến dịch bệnh lây lan, hệ thống y tế bị quá tải, dẫn tới nhiều ca tử vong.
Tỷ phú Gates thừa nhận việc tự cách ly là “thảm họa” với nền kinh tế, nhưng ông cho rằng nước Mỹ không còn lựa chọn nào khác. Theo người sáng lập Microsoft, các doanh nghiệp Mỹ nên đóng cửa trong 6-10 tuần để góp phần kiểm soát dịch bệnh.
Bên cạnh đó, ông Gates cũng kêu gọi chính phủ Mỹ đẩy mạnh năng lực xét nghiệm Covid-19. “Công tác xét nghiệm cần được tổ chức lại và phải được ưu tiên. Đây là điều vô cùng cấp thiết”, ông nhấn mạnh.
Trong nhiều năm qua, tỷ phú Bill Gates tập trung vào lĩnh vực y tế với các hoạt động thông qua quỹ từ thiện Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Trong một chương trình TED Talk vào năm 2015, ông cảnh báo rằng thế giới cần chuẩn bị tốt hơn để đối phó với một đại dịch.
“Chúng ta thực sự đang đầu tư quá ít ỏi cho một hệ thống có khả năng dập tắt đại dịch. Chúng ta chưa sẵn sàng cho một đại dịch tiếp theo”, Bill Gates phát biểu trong chương trình năm 2015.
Khi nhắc lại chương trình này trong buổi trò chuyện hôm 24/3, ông Gates nói rằng “điều đáng buồn là chính quyền không thực hiện nhiều hành động cần thiết”.
