Forever 21 từng là “tượng đài” của ngành thời trang nhanh, với 800 địa điểm và hơn 4,4 tỷ USD doanh thu mỗi năm, tưởng chừng như chẳng có gì có thể làm lung lay “đế chế” này.
Cổ tích không có hậu
Forever 21 khởi đầu như một câu chuyện “cổ tích”: Vào năm 1981, Jin Sook và Do Won Chang nhập cư từ Hàn Quốc đến Los Angeles với giấc mơ đổi đời, họ hoàn toàn không có tiền, chẳng có trình độ học vấn và chút kỹ năng Tiếng Anh nào.
Để tồn tại ở thành phố L.A. hoa lệ, Jin Sook trở thành thợ cắt tóc, còn Don thì chật vật làm đủ việc, từ lao công, bơm gas cho đến phục vụ bàn… Nhưng vì có cơ hội “ngày đây mai đó”, Don nhận ra chân lý: “Những người chạy xe đẹp toàn làm trong ngành thời trang”.
Ba năm sau đó, cặp đôi này quyết định dốc hết 11.000 USD tiền tiết kiệm để mở cửa tiệm “Fashion 21” (tiền thân của Forever 21), tập trung “săn” sản phẩm giảm giá, “xào nấu” lại rồi bán với mức giá chênh lệch.
Nhà sáng lập giải thích thêm về tên thương hiệu: “Thế hệ trung niên ai cũng muốn sống lại tuổi 21 lần nữa trong khi người trẻ chỉ muốn mãi mãi tuổi 21”
Mô hình đơn giản trên đã đem về cho họ hơn 700.000 USD và 11 cửa tiệm ngay năm đầu tiên, đưa Forever 21 vào giai đoạn “phát triển thần tốc” khi khai trương 1 cửa hàng mới mỗi 6 tháng.
Forever 21 cũng “thần tốc” biến hai nhà sáng lập trở thành cặp đôi giàu nhất nước Mỹ với tổng tài sản lên đến 5,9 tỷ USD vào năm 2015, trở thành một “biểu tượng” trong ngành thời trang nhanh với doanh thu cao nhất là 4,4 tỷ USD mỗi năm.
Nhưng song song với sự tăng trưởng thần tốc của Forever 21 là một “địa ngục bán lẻ” đang ra sức hủy diệt. Theo hãng UBS, kể từ đầu thế kỷ 21, hơn 15.000 thương hiệu bán lẻ và 75.000 địa điểm đã biến mất dưới sự ảnh hưởng của “địa ngục”, trong đó là hàng loạt thương hiệu “gạo cội” như Sears, Toys R Us, Payless …
Và Forever 21 không phải là trường hợp ngoại lệ. Dù có thế mạnh về thương hiệu, địa điểm và giá thành, nhưng Forever 21 vẫn trở thành một miếng mồi ngon cho thế hệ “quái vật bán lẻ” mới, tiêu biểu là mô hình mua sắm online và cửa hàng đại hạ giá, tất cả những gì họ cần làm là tung ra những sản phẩm thời trang với giá thành “rẻ mạt”.
Chính vì thế, cái chết của Forever 21 cũng không quá ngạc nhiên với giới phân tích, thậm chí nhiều người còn khen ngợi khả năng “sống sót” đến giờ này của thương hiệu trên. Với tổng nợ đã vượt mốc 500 triệu USD và hàng trăm cửa hàng không còn sinh lợi tại hơn 40 quốc gia, nộp đơn phá sản là một bước đi đúng đắn.
Hãng thời trang “lỗi mốt”
Mọi chuyện bắt đầu khi Forever 21 dần trở nên “lạc nhịp” trong các trung tâm mua sắm. Trong khi các đối thủ như Zara và Abercrombie & Fitch liên tục gia tăng chất lượng sản phẩm, Forever 21 vẫn khăng khăng giữ lấy mô hình “hàng rẻ – giá rẻ” của mình.
Không những thế, những thương hiệu cạnh tranh với Forever 21 đã đi trước một bước khi liên tục giảm số lượng địa điểm bán lẻ để đảm bảo lợi nhuận và gia tăng giá trị cho khách hàng, Forever 21 dường như vẫn “bình chân như vại”, ngày càng trở nên lạ lẫm với người tiêu dùng.
Forever 21 cũng trở nên “già cỗi” khi không tận dụng được 16 triệu lượt theo dõi đang có trên Instagram, trong khi các thương hiệu “trẻ trung” khác như Fashion Nova, ASOS và Missguided, liên tục tung ra các chương trình quảng cáo viral trên mạng xã hội, gần như trở thành một “tân Forever 21” trong mắt người dùng với thiết kế sành điệu, giá rẻ và tốc độ cập nhật nhanh.
Như “xát muối vào vết thương”, Forever 21 không những không cân nhắc tinh giảm mô hình mà còn liên tục mở rộng địa điểm, khiến chi phí ngày một leo thang.
“Đầu tiên là việc đánh mất “gu thời trang” của mình, Forever 21 từng là một thương hiệu sao chép tốc độ cao, nhưng họ dần trở nên rối rắm và chẳng để lại ấn tượng gì, trong khi chất lượng ngày càng đi xuống.” – theo Janet Kloppenburg, một chuyên viên phân tích của JJK Associates: “Nhưng địa điểm của họ lại ngày một to hơn, một cửa hàng còn rộng đến gần 2.000 mét vuông.”
Những gã khổng lồ
Thành công của Forever 21 đến từ mô hình “thời trang nhanh” được vận dụng cực kỳ hiệu quả. Dù sản phẩm được sản xuất hàng loạt ở các nước gia công giá rẻ, nhưng Forever 21 vẫn khôn khéo phân bổ số lượng, mẫu mã và thời gian mở bán của các bộ sưu tập nhằm tạo cảm giác “độc lạ” cho người mua.
Nhưng tiếc rằng yếu tố trên đã bị gạt sang một bên để ưu tiên mở rộng, phong cách của Forever 21 nhanh chóng trở nên “đại trà”. Rất nhiều khách hàng trung thành của thương hiệu này đã cảm thấy bị “phản bội” và quay sang các thương hiệu tương tự như H&M và Zara.
Trong khi đó, những đại siêu thị giảm giá như Walmart và Target ngày một trở nên “sành điệu” hơn khi “học lóm” mô hình hoạt động thời trang nhanh, với quy mô của mình, những “gã khổng lồ bán lẻ” dễ dàng đè bẹp Forever 21 về giá bán cũng như địa điểm.
Target còn tiến xa hơn một bước khi kết hợp với những nhà tạo mẫu có tiếng như Victoria Beckham để tung ra những bộ sưu tập dư sức cạnh tranh với những hãng thời trang cao cấp.
Forever 21 từng phát triển mạnh mẽ ngay trong các đại siêu thị với tính thời trang và mức giá rẻ của mình, nhưng tất cả đã nhanh chóng biến mất.
Ở một khía cạnh vĩ mô hơn, các đại siêu thị với chuỗi cung ứng khổng lồ của mình dễ dàng đối phó với xu hướng gia tăng chi phí gia công và thuế nhập khẩu. Trong khi đó, các nhãn hiệu thời trang nhanh vẫn đang “đau đầu” suy nghĩ cách đối phó khi lợi thế cạnh tranh “giá rẻ” ngày một sa sút.
“Mô hình siêu thị với doanh thu khổng lồ dễ dàng đánh bại các thương hiệu thời trang nhanh bằng giá thành tốt hơn.” – theo Nick Giacoumakis, một chuyên gia phân tích tại New England Investment & Retirement.
Kết quả
Nhưng câu chuyện chưa kết thúc tại đây, theo CNBC, Forever 21 đã nhận được 275 triệu USD từ JPMorgan Chase và 75 triệu USD từ TPG Sixth Street Partners để duy trì hoạt động trong thời gian xin bảo hộ phá sản.
Lên kế hoạch rút khỏi 40 quốc gia và đóng cửa 178 cửa hàng ở Mỹ, nhưng Forever 21 vẫn sẽ tiếp tục vận hành website bán hàng và hàng trăm địa điểm còn lại tại Mỹ, Mexico và Mỹ Latin, với mục tiêu hiện tại là thu hẹp hoạt động và cắt lỗ.
