Theo quan điểm của startup này, tỷ lệ cổ phàn sở hữu không quá quan trọng. Vấn đề là khi thương thảo, startup phải biết khả năng của mình đến đâu trước khi chấp nhận vốn cũng như các yêu cầu từ phía nhà đầu tư.
“Trong 100 startup chắc có 90 startup gặp vấn đề tài chính, 10 startup còn lại không có tiền, vì vậy chúng ta luôn luôn khao khát gọi vốn, ai cũng nghĩ tới gọi vốn”, anh Nguyễn Duy Vĩ, đồng sáng lập kiêm giám đốc tiếp thị của Tugo Travel chia sẻ trong sự kiện “Toàn cảnh bức tranh huy động vốn” do VnExpress tổ chức cách đây không lâu.
Ra đời năm 2015, Tugo đánh vào thị trường du lịch, cung cấp các tour có chất lượng tương đương đối thủ nhưng mức giá rẻ hơn tới 50%. Ban đầu những người sáng lập đều nghĩ rằng mô hình tốt, chiến lược tốt, họ quyết định gọi vốn 10 triệu USD, nuôi mơ ước trở thành kỳ lân chỉ sau 1 năm. Kết quả nhận về chỉ là một cục nợ lớn.
“Lúc đó chúng tôi phải làm chiến lược rất nhiều và vốn trở thành câu chuyện sinh tử. Chúng tôi đều nghĩ đây là bức tranh màu hồng cho đến khi chúng tôi hết tiền. Vấn đề là nên chấp nhận thua cuộc hay dám cầm cố để đi tiếp”, anh Vĩ nhớ lại.
Để giải bài toán về vốn, những người sáng lập Tugo ngồi lại, quyết định góp tiền dựa vào tỷ lệ cổ phần sở hữu để startup hoạt động. Anh Vĩ thậm chí còn phải bán xe, lén lấy sổ đỏ gia đình đi cầm đồ.
Rất may mắn sau 2 năm hoạt động, Tugo đã đạt đến điểm hòa vốn và ghi nhận mức tăng trưởng doanh thu trung bình 200%. Trong tổng lượng vé Vietnam Airlines xuất bán cho các công ty du lịch, Tugo nằm trong top 5 công ty dẫn đầu, chỉ sau Vietravel, Saigontourist và một đơn vị khác nữa.

Tới thời điểm này, đồng sáng lập Tugo tiết lộ họ đã gặp nhiều nhà đầu tư nhưng gọi vốn không thành công, bởi vấn đề quan trọng nhất là nhà đầu tư không hiểu về ngành mà startup theo đuổi.
“Có một kiểu nhà đầu tư chỉ nhìn thấy tốc độ scale (gia tăng quy mô-PV) của các bạn để nhận định startup tốt hay không. Nếu tốt họ sẽ rót vốn nhưng bạn phải cam kết sau bao năm có bao nhiêu tiền. Trò đó chúng tôi không chơi”.
“Chúng tôi cần tìm người đi cùng trong 5 năm trên con đường trở thành một thế lực mới ở thị trường du lịch Việt Nam. Chúng tôi gọi vốn để làm điều đó”, anh Vĩ nhấn mạnh.
Theo tiết lộ, Tugo đang trong quá trình kêu gọi khoản đầu tư trị giá 100 triệu USD từ hai đối tác Hàn Quốc và Nhật Bản. Nếu không thành công, họ sẽ đi tiếp con đường trước đây, tự bỏ vốn 1 triệu USD để mở rộng thị trường.
Riêng về quan điểm cổ phần startup nắm giữ khi gọi vốn, anh Vĩ cho biết không quá coi trọng về điều này.
“Khi gọi vốn bản thân Tugo không quan trọng cổ phần nhà đầu tư là bao nhiêu vì chúng tôi quan niệm thà sở hữu 10% trong công ty trị giá hàng trăm triệu USD còn hơn 90% ở công ty giá trị 1 triệu USD”.
Cũng theo anh, với startup nói chung, câu chuyện không phải ai là người kiểm soát mà quan trọng là startup đó có thể làm gì. Anh thừa nhận thực trạng nhiều startup hiện nay thấy nhà đầu tư rót vốn là “mừng như cá gặp nước”, ký hợp đồng ngay. Nhưng ký xong thì “banh xác” vì startup thua lỗ, phải bỏ tiền túi ra bù. Nếu không bù thì startup phải bán tiếp cổ phần cho nhà đầu tư và có thể là mất trắng.
“Khi đàm phán, các bạn phải biết rõ chúng ta đang làm việc gì, chúng ta làm được tới đâu, cộng sự của chúng ta có năng lực không. Nếu chúng ta biết mình làm được gì và chắc chắn với khả năng ấy thì không có ông nào gọi là “cá mập” hết”, đồng sáng lập Tugo nhắn nhủ startup.
